Scotland Winter Dressing

Scotland is simply awesome. The northernmost country of the UK, Scotland is one of my favorite vacation destinations. In my many trips to Scotland from London, I have found that there is no hot season here. It’s always cold out there, and colder. So you have to pack wisely if you are planning a trip.

Scottish weather is very fickle. The temperature drops suddenly, taking you by surprise. There is a lot of rain too, throughout the year. In May, for instance, on the Isle of Skye, there can be 11 days of rainfall, and May is the year’s driest month. In December, you will get about 20 days of rain. The temperature will go down even more when it rains. There are also the Highlands and the Lowlands, so you have to dress adequately depending on where you are visiting. Glasgow and Edinburgh are in the Lowlands.

Scottish Highlands and Lowlands

outdoor winter outfit

There are many outdoor attractions in the Highlands, like wildlife, mountains and lakes. Snowfall is frequent in the winter. Dress in layers, no matter which time of the year you are visiting, but add additional warm winter clothing between September and May. I would recommend thermal clothing below your trail pants and long sleeves if you are visiting the Northern Highlands.

But when you are visiting the Lowlands, you will be staying in big cities like Glasgow or Edinburgh with outings to nearby rivers and valleys. So it’s best to pack different types of clothing and wear them based on the day’s activities. Remember, the wind picks up between December and February, so it’s best to carry light hooded trench-coat that will give you the protection you need.

Rain Gear for Scotland

There is rain throughout the year, including the winter. So you will certainly need to carry a hooded rain-resistant jacket and an umbrella.

Packing for Scotland

jacket with jeans

  • Carry clothes for all seasons for The Trossachs, Loch Lomond, Highlands, or The Isles because you will find everything in a day – wind, sunshine, rain, and snow.
  • Pack a waterproof jacket for coat, gloves, scarf, and a warm hat or ear muffs for months between November and March. Waterproof boots with non-slip soles will be very handy in December, when it is really cold.
  • You must also keep a fleece jacket with you so that you can wear it under the rain jacket. You can also wear the jacket on a warm day.

cardigan outfit

  • Don’t visit Scotland without your jumper or sweatshirt, a zipper or cardigan. Keep it heavier for the Highlands.
  • Do not keep your skin exposed. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
  • Carry trekking pants and long-sleeved trekking shirts if you like to do some walking. There are many wonderful routes you can walk in the country, even during the winter months.
  • A good pair of waterproof walking shoes will be a must-carry as well. Preferably get shoes with high ankles.

Here’s a list of the top 10 places to visit in Scotland. Make sure to visit as many as you can when you go to the country.
